Mirror glaze gives cakes and desserts a smooth and shiny look, the surface appearing reflective. It is usually applied to mousse cakes, bavarois and other cold or frozen desserts since a uniform coating contributes to a neat finish. As various glaze products have different consistencies, colours and methods of application, it is necessary to select one that is appropriate for the dessert you are making.

How Are Mirror Glazes Used in Cake Decorating?

Ready-to-use mirror glaze can make the final step easier, even though the way it has to be prepared differs from product to product. With some glazes it is necessary to stir them or gently warm them before using them, while there are glazes which should be applied according to the special instructions provided by the manufacturer. If the glaze is applied evenly over a cake that has been properly prepared, this will help to avoid streaks and uneven areas.

However, the base underneath the glaze is just as important; depending on the recipe, a cold or frozen dessert can be used as a base. In the case of cakes which are finished with other kinds of coverings, sugarpaste and rolled icings provide another method of achieving a smooth surface before adding the appropriate decorative details.

What Is the Difference Between Mirror Glaze and Other Cake Glazes?

Mirror glaze is mostly used to provide the shiny, glossy coating. The confectioners glaze is usually used to provide a shine on suitable edible decorations, whereas Dip 'n Drip is used to provide coating and drips on the cakes and cupcakes. Since these products cannot be used interchangeably in all recipes, it is necessary to check their intended uses before using them.

Colour and presentation can also affect the final result. Pistachio-coloured glaze makes a completely different look compared to a white glaze, edible cake decorations can go well with the glossy coating. Also, if you want to go with shaped decorations, then they can be made using sugar flower and modelling paste and then placed next to glazed cakes. When the decorations are completed, the cake can be displayed and transported on a suitable cake board.

Make sure to check the storage instructions, the ingredients and the allergen information for each product since some of the products may contain eggs, peanuts, soya, milk or nuts, and some of the colourings might have an adverse effect on children's activity and attention.
